Post-Match Report: Women vs Appledore (A)
An assessment from today’s match from manager, Dave Court.
Yeovil Town Women produced a controlled performance and win over Appledore in the South West Regional Division One South, courtesy of goals from Lily McNally and Becky Miles.
The Glovers showed their intentions inside the opening minutes when Jodi Cornwall came close, her delivery from the right skimmed the crossbar. Yeovil continued to apply pressure and nearly found the breakthrough from a corner on nine minutes, as Becky Miles’ delivery picked out Lily McNally, whose header drifted just wide.
The breakthrough arrived shortly after, and it was a moment of quality. McNally laid the ball into the path of Cornwall, who calmly fired into the bottom right corner to give Yeovil the lead.
Yeovil remained on the front foot, with Miles at the heart of much of the attacking play. Another dangerous corner on nineteen minutes somehow stayed out, before she tested the goalkeeper from distance midway through the first half. Her persistence paid off on the half-hour mark, as she doubled Yeovil’s advantage with a well-taken goal.
At the other end, Yeovil stayed organised. A free kick conceded by Skilton just before the break came to nothing as the effort was fired straight into the wall. Jodi Cornwall nearly added a third before half-time with an ambitious strike from range, but it flew over the crossbar.
The second half saw Yeovil continue to control the game.. Miles’ corner early after the restart was well dealt with by the goalkeeper, while Cornwall remained a constant threat, driving forward and delivering dangerous balls into the area.
Set pieces continued to offer opportunities, and just before the hour mark Miles found Wensley from a free kick, but her header couldn’t find the target.
Despite their dominance, Yeovil had to wait until the closing stages to get their third goal of the afternoon. McNally had earlier seen a cross evade everyone in the box, but she made no mistake in the eighty-ninth minute. She picked up the ball in a dangerous area and fired it into the right-hand side of the net to seal the result and secure three points.
